you are here: Spetses

It is the most south-western island of the Saronikos Gulf, and one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan. Just three hours from Athens and close to Porto Heli, the little island of Spetses is no stranger to the Greek royal family who often spend their holidays enjoying its charming scenery. With its naval tradition, rich history and distinctive culture, it makes a perfect destination all year long. The pace of life here flows at a different rate, with bikes and horse-drawn carriages being popular means of transport to get around and discover the great mansions, the pine woods that reach down to the shores of the clear sea and the beautiful pebbled beaches. Since 1931, the naval battle of Spetses (8 September 1822) has been re-enacted each year as an attempt to recreate the defeat of the Turkish fleet. Two-week artistic events take place including exhibitions of paintings, concerts, traditional dances and theatrical performances, reaching their peak with the dramatisation of the sea battle. Real ships are used, and a model ship is built especially for the occasion, in order to be burnt in the sea among a massive firework display!
